• यह वायरस जनित पक्षियों की बीमारी है जो मुख्यतः जंगली जलीय पक्षियों में स्वाभाविक रूप से होते हैं।
• बर्ड फ्लू मुख्यतः मुर्गियों का बड़ा ही संक्रामक रोग है। संक्रमित पक्षी के सम्पर्क में आने से यह संक्रमण मनुष्यों में फैल सकता है। यह अत्यन्त संक्रामक वायरस जनित रोग है । जिसके कारण मुर्गी पालन व्यवसाय को भारी नुकसान उठाना पड़ सकता है।
• मनुष्य खासकर बच्चे, अगर बीमार पक्षी की (म्यूकस) बीट और पंखों के सम्पर्क में आ जायें तो उनमें संक्रमण फैल सकता है।
• मनुष्यों में बर्ड फ्लू के लक्षण साधारण फ्लू से मिलते-जुलते हैं जैसे कि साँस लेने में तकलीफ, तेज बुखार, जुकाम और नाक बहना, ऐसी शिकायत होने पर नजदीकी स्वास्थ्य केन्द्र को तुरंत इसकी सूचना दें।

सामान्यतः बर्ड फ्लू का वायरस 70°C तापमान पर नष्ट हो जाता है। किसी स्थान पर बर्ड फ्लू रोग की पुष्टि होने पर भी अण्डे व चिकन 70 C तापमान पर पकाकर खाने में कोई नुकसान नहीं हैं।

इससे डरें नहीं सावधानियाँ बरतें :

बीमार मुर्गियों के सीधे सम्पर्क में न आयें। दस्ताने या किसी भी अन्य सुरक्षा साधन का इस्तेमाल करें। बीमार पक्षियों के पंख, श्लेष्मा (म्यूकस) और बीट को न छुयें। छुये जाने की स्थिति में साबुन से तुरंत अच्छे तरीके से हाथ धोयें।

मुर्गियों को बाड़े में रखें। संक्रमित पक्षियों को मार कर उनका सुरक्षित निपटान करें। बीमार अथवा मरे हुए पक्षी की सूचना निकटतम पशु चिकित्सालय को तुरंत दें। ऐसा करना जन स्वास्थ्य के लिए आवश्यक है।

मुर्गे–मुर्गियों के संक्रामक रोगों से बचाव के लिए सोने से खरे कुछ उपाय :

पक्षियों को रानीखेत गम्बोरो और बर्ड फ्लू जैसी कई बीमारियां हो सकती है। ये बीमारियां एक पक्षी से दुसरी पक्षी में व दूषित पानी से अथवा प्रभावित पक्षी के मल-मूत्र, पंखों आदि के जरिये पूरे झुंड को तेजी से प्रभावित कर सकती है। मुर्गी पालन से जुड़े होने के नाते आप अच्छी तरह जानते हैं कि अपने पक्षियों को इन बीमारियों से बचाना कितना महत्वपूर्ण है।

आइये अपने पक्षियों के साथ–साथ अपने बचाव के लिए निम्नलिखित तरीके अपनाएँ:

1. बाड़े में सुरक्षित रखें : अपने पक्षियों को बाड़े में रखिये, केवल आपकी पौल्ट्री फार्म की देखभाल करने वालों को ही पक्षियों के पास जाना चाहिए। अनावश्यक लोगों को बाड़े में प्रवेश न करने दें। अपने मुर्गे-मुर्गी को दूसरे पक्षियों / पशुओं के सम्पर्क में न आने दें। दो प्रजातियों के पक्षियों को एक ही बाड़े में न रखें।
2. साफ–सफाई रखें: पक्षियों के बाड़े में और उसके आसपास साफ-सफाई बहुत जरूरी है। इस प्रकार जीवाणु और विषाणुओं से बचा जा सकता है, पक्षियों के बाड़ों को साफ-सुथरा रखें अपने पोल्ट्री फार्म / बाड़े को नियमित रूप से चूने अथवा कीटाणुनाशक दवाओं को छिड़काव कर संक्रमण मुक्त करते रहें।
3. आहार एवं पेयजल व्यवस्था: पक्षियों को स्वस्छ एवं शीतल पेयजल और संतुलित आहार दें। पक्षियों का भोजन एवं पेयजल रोजाना बदलें व पेयजल और भोजन के बर्तनों की नियमित साफ-सफाई करें।
4. अपने पोल्ट्री फार्म में बीमारियों को प्रवेश करने से रोकें: अपने आपको और बाजार या अन्य फार्मों में अन्य पक्षियों के संपर्क में आने वाली हर चीज की साफ-सफाई रखें। नये पक्षी को कम-से-कम 30 दिनों तक अपने स्वस्थ पक्षियों से दूर रखें। बीमारी को फैलने से रोकने या बचाव के लिए पौल्ट्री के संपर्क में आने से पहले और बाद में अपने हाथ, कपड़ों और जूतों को धोयें तथा संक्रमण मुक्त करें।
5. बीमारी उधार न लें: यदि आप अन्य फार्मों से उपकरण या पक्षी लेते हैं तो अपने स्वस्थ पक्षियों के संपर्क में आने से पहले भली भांति उनकी सफाई करें और संक्रमण मुक्त करें। अनावश्यक लोगों व अन्य फार्म पर कार्यरत मजदूरों एवं वाहनों को अपने फार्म पर प्रवेश न दें।
6. लक्षणों को पहचानें: अपने पक्षियों पर नजर रखें, यदि पक्षियों की आंख, गर्दन और सिर के आस-पास सूजन है और आँखों से रिसाव हो रहा है, कलनी और टांगों में नीलापन आ रहा है. अचानक कमजोरी, पंख गिरना बढ़ रहा है और पक्षियों की हरकत में कमी आ रही है, पक्षी आहार कम ले रहे हैं व अण्डे भी कम दे रहे हैं और असामान्य रूप से अधिक पक्षी मर रहे हैं, तो यह सब खतरे के संकेत हैं। यदि पक्षियों में ऐसे असामन्य लक्षण दिखाई देते है तो इसे छुपायें नहीं क्योंकि यह आपके परिवार के स्वास्थ्य के लिए नुकसानदायक हो सकता है।
7. बीमार पक्षी की सूचना : अपने पक्षियों की हर असामान्य बीमारी अथवा मौत की सूचना निकटतम पशु चिकित्सालय को तत्काल दें।
